Marital Advice to my Grandson Joel How to be a husband your wife won't throw out of the window in the middle of the night Peter Davidson 9780692998151 Books

Of all decisions a man will ever make, marriage is the blockbuster. Choosing a mate for life is the epitome of a man’s existence; after all, it’s not just about his own future, but that of his bride-to-be. From here on, every choice he makes determines the course of his and his wife’s path for better or for worse, to coin a phrase.

Accordingly, when a man decides to take the plunge, he receives all manner of advice from his male relatives and friends. Such counsel takes a variety of forms. However, when his grandson, Joel, announced his engagement, Peter Davidson took it a giant leap further. Drawing from his own repository, Mr. Davidson put his wisdom down in the form of a blog, thus ensuring that not only his grandson but also all future husbands, would see it and benefit from his advice.

That advice has been transformed into a book, capturing the essence of Mr. Davidson’s matrimonial expertise. Simply put, MARITAL ADVICE FOR MY GRANDSON, JOEL is a godsend for husbands-to-be. Mr. Davidson dispenses his grandfatherly advice in a warm, down-to-earth style that is hilarious and informative in equal measure. His book is sprinkled liberally with sage counsel for men looking to get married, giving equal attention to all the funny, sad, angry, and sweet parts of marriage. Writing with a wonderfully witty tone, Mr. Davidson gives his book a true sense of a seasoned husband sitting his grandson down for a heart-to-heart talk about what it takes to make a marriage work.

Through a creative mixture of personal anecdotes, case studies, and cautionary tales, Mr. Davidson lets his readers know exactly what they’re in for once they get hitched. His sage wisdom runs the gamut of marital adventures, including:
• nice little things guys can do for their wives;
• how to respond when she asks how she looks in an outfit;
• how best to deal with embarrassing moments;
• thoughtful gifts for special occasions (Spoiler: Do NOT, under any circumstances, give your wife cleaning tools as presents);
• navigating the waters of relations with in-laws;
• how to interpret a woman’s moods and body language (in particular, the dreaded “Look”);
• romantic things to say and things to avoid saying (in the author’s own words, “Your mouth will get you in more trouble than your willy ever will”);
• insights as to how women shop;
• and even tips for financial investment (after all, it’s not just about you anymore).

These are but a few kernels of wisdom from Mr. Davidson’s book that men would do well to heed.

Major bonus: Women can benefit from reading Mr. Davidson’s book, too. Ladies will find themselves nodding in agreement with every word about failings and misunderstandings, and laughing out loud at all episodes detailing the misadventures of marriage. Most of all, new brides and brides-to-be will glean a wealth of helpful hints for whipping their menfolk into shape. While these anecdotes verge on the stereotypical, they're all written with a tongue-in-cheek delivery that makes readers chuckle.

With this delightful little book, Peter Davidson has put together an essential guide to the brave new world of marriage. It’s a path fraught with potholes and obstacles, but those couples willing to stay the course will be rewarded with immeasurable bliss and countless precious moments. Mr. Davidson gives his grandson Joel—and millions of other engaged men and women—a generous dose of hope.

If there’s one thing all men should take away from Mr. Davidson’s enchanting book, it would be this: Guys, you’re NOT as smart or as funny as you think you are. Yet, out of the billions of eligible bachelors on this planet, your wife chose YOU. Obviously, she’s a special woman who thinks you’re pretty special, too.

Read this book, follow its advice, and prove her right.

P.S. Don’t forget the electrical tape!

41/2 stars "Marital Advice to my Grandson Joel How to be a husband your wife won’t throw out of the window in the middle of the night" by Peter Davidson is a delight and a treasure. The book consists of a series of anecdotes, observations and snippets of advice, to assist the unwary male in negotiating the ins and outs of marriage. Sure, some of the information imparted may be consider a little dated, or male-centric (which is the point of the piece, so relax about it), but among the often tongue-in-cheek, frequently humourous pieces are some grains of truth, well-worth observing (I’m talking specifically about the sections on flatulence, gifts, loo paper positioning and cleaning your shaving cream off the bathroom mirror!).

I see many opportunities for future books in the series, like “how to be a good father”, “dealing with teenagers” and alike. The book makes for an entertaining read, and would be a great gift book for any young man (or older man for that matter) about to get married.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When Peter Davison’s son got engaged, he decided to write down some thoughts and advice for a successful and happy marriage. This 150 page, light-hearted “how-to” book contains advice on a variety of subjects that his grandson will experience in his marriage. The book contains advice on

how to handle “the look”
how to be spontaneous
helping out in the home
being the husband his wife will brag about
gift giving
stocks
…and many more.

This short how-to on marriage is light-hearted and will have the reader chuckling. Most of the advice seems to be made in jest. However, this advice is only relatable for “traditional” marriages. The advice is very stereotypical and not relatable to everyone. For instance, he advises that if his wife is an awful cook, to eat the food anyway and don’t complain. In my home, my husband is the cook. He works all day and comes home and makes his family dinner. Why? Because he likes to cook and is the better cook. The author talks about how it’s ingrained in women from childhood about shopping. My husband splurges more than I do. And if either one of us wants something, we just tell the other.

There were a couple things that had me pause. For example, he talks about a hypothetical situation where his wife is giving him “the look” and how it could mean a number of things, like “stop staring at the waitress’s boobs.” If your husband has an issue with staring at your server’s breasts then there are some problems that need to be discussed.

However, there were some moments that had me laughing out loud. For instance, helping out around the house and how it can turn-on. But I truly loved how the author discusses how important it is to support his wife in her business ventures. This I can absolutely relate to. I absolutely love to work. However, after having two children, childcare costs more to work than me staying home with them. So I decided to become a book reviewer and work from home! I couldn’t have done it without my husband’s support!

Overall, I thought this was a sweet gesture for the author’s grandson! It was funny and provided a little insight into how to keep the little arguments away and avoid fighting in the marriage!
